Essential Microbiology Online College Course- Portage Learning
Portage Learning students are enjoying some unique updates to our Essential Microbiology with lab course. In addition to a traditional lecture/textbook approach, Professor Janine Bartholomew is employing case studies with a storytelling element.
“This has been shown to increase student engagement, promote active learning in a real-world scenario, and improve critical thinking and learner outcomes,” she said.
Online students have been drawn to the interactive activities and opportunities for immediate feedback which, Professor Bartholomew pointed out, build confidence, mastery of the material, and curiosity about the topics. The course features a series of six case studies called “Moving Micro to the Clinic.” Each focuses on a central theme to microbiology while pulling in relevant supporting content. The material also offers prompts for students to reach out to faculty for more insight or clarification.
